Deena Watson

Hi I’m Deena Watson! I am VIDEA’s Indigenous Governance Officer and a member of Team Aunties!!!
Aunties hold such an important role in our everyday lives, especially in Indigenous communities. They are here to share responsibilities with kin, they help youth build morals, they offer a special role as an additional parent, they offer knowledge/wisdom, and they provide a trusting foundation to support the younger generation on their journey to becoming strong, genuine individuals.
Sadly, as most of us all know, MMIWG2S is an ongoing human rights crisis. Our women, girls and 2S’s are going missing and murdered more than anybody else in this country. Violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2S in Canada today cannot be understood without first examining the effects of Canada’s harmful history of settler colonialism on Indigenous families and communities. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people live with an almost constant threat to their physical, emotional, economic, social, and cultural security. Above all of this, Indigenous women and Two-Spirit individuals bring restoration and healing to our communities as they lift us through these challenging times. Matriarch power is transformative power.
I have an auntie care package to raffle on Sunday, July 25th!
